Coaching: When Is A Goal Not Realistic?
One of the steps that many coaches help their clients work through in the coaching process is the issue of how realistic a given goal is felt to be.
It has been my experience that a discussion of goals in this context can severely undermine a client’s motivation and desire to proceed any further. Let me explain.
If a client feels in their heart that a particular goal is desirable then, in my view, that desire should take precedence over any thoughts of the probability of such a goal ever being achieved.
I say this for a number of reasons.
1. If a client desires a particular goal it is this desire that acts as the driving force in helping them to ultimately achieve it. To say that such a goal is unrealistic is equivalent to killing that desire from the start.
2. One’s desire gives meaning to one’s life, one’s purpose, one’s efforts and one’s goals. This sense of meaning must be kept alive in order to keep hope and joy alive.
3. I have seen the power of one’s desire overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. In the process the client has stepped outside of their comfort zone and grown into a more empowered and self confident individual. This, in my view, is the goal of a coaching relationship! To restrict such growth means letting them down completely because this is really what clients seek coaches out for in the first place.
It is my experience that we are all capable of remarkable things, indeed what some consider miracles, and that we really have no limitations that cannot be dismantled or overcome. As one coach to another I ask that you adopt such a mindset as it will make your work that much more inspiring.
To suggest anything less means not only letting your client down it also means letting the rest of the world down because every individual’s unique contribution is so much needed on this planet at this time.
