Bono: U2’s Passionate Philanthropist
Paul David Hewson, more popularly known as Bono, was born in Dublin, Ireland. He joined the Irish rock band U2 when he was in high school, eventually becoming its vocalist. With Bono’s brilliant voice and charismatic stage presence, U2 stormed the music industry.
Bono uses his celebrity status to generate attention on several causes he is passionate about. He has collaborated with fellow performers and artists on several worthy projects like Band Aid and Live Aid. He is also very vocal about his support for the campaign geared towards generating awareness of the plight of Africa, particularly in relation to AIDS. In fact, the U2 front man is co-founder of DATA (Debt AIDS Trade Africa), an organization dedicated to ending poverty and fighting AIDS in Africa.
Bono is also an active campaigner for Greenpeace and likewise works towards a goal of ending third world debt. Together with his wife, he founded a “socially responsible clothing line” called EDUN which is meant to extend sustainable employment opportunities to developing countries, especially Africa.
This endearing musician’s humanitarian works exceed the countless awards and recognitions he has received. Though not lacking in criticism, Bono has become an example for millions of youths and celebrities around the world.
Even as he was named one of Time Magazine’s Persons of the Year in 2005, and after being bestowed honorary knighthood by the United Kingdom in 2007, Bono continues to passionately live his dream of a poverty-free, AIDS-free, and debt-free world.
