Bacardi - World’s Leading Rum Producer and Patriot
It is quite ironic how the top-selling spirits company Bacardi does not sell a single drop in Cuba, the country in which the company was established over 145 years ago. Bacardi has had a long intertwining history with Cuba. The Bacardi clan helped shape the country politically and economically. Bacardi Cuba patriotically served its country until its Fidel Castro nationalized their facilities.
The founder Facundo Bacardi was the first mayor of Santiago, where he first started his business after purchasing a shabby little distillery. When he founded the company, he probably would not have expected that it would reap worldwide success and involve itself in shaping Cuba’s history.
Facundo was born in Spain. When he moved to Cuba, rum was not a very popular drink and was cheaply made. He decided to create a refined taste of rum and attempted to sell it to the public. As he experimented in creating different blends, Facundo found a way to remove rum impurities by using charcoal and started to store rum in oak barrels. The result was rum that made Cuba the paradise for rum and Bacardi Cuba the king of rums.
Today, Bacardi Cuba sells over 200 million bottles a year in over 100 countries. The company is headquartered in Bermuda.
