Poker Betting
The game of poker online is won through betting, which drives some players out of a hand, and builds a bigger pot for the winner.
There are established procedures that players follow in online poker betting. First, there are “blind” or “ante” bets, which players must put up before the cards are even dealt. This ensures that there are chips (money) in the pot and will drive further action.
Once these bets are out, the player to the left of the dealer button or blinds is the first to act. During the initial round of a hand, players must either match the blind or ante to continue playing the hand, or else fold their cards.
After the first round of betting, during which some players will have dropped out, another card is dealt, and players make another betting decision. At this point, the first to act can check, or bet, and even raise.
When the first to act checks, i.e. does not put out a bet, then the other players can also check behind, or seize the option to bet, forcing other players to put more chips in the pot or fold their hands.
If a bet does come out, then any other players who want to remain in the hand must match the original bet. They can chose to match it, raise or to fold.
The betting continues until all the cards are dealt. At that point, the winner is established either by showing the best hand, or by making a bet that no one calls, causing all the remaining players to fold their cards. Keep this in mind when you play poker online.
